Overview
The Augusta GreenJackets are a Minor League Baseball team that competes in the Carolina League as a Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. They play their home games at SRP Park, located in North Augusta, South Carolina.
History
From 1980 to 2020, Augusta was part of the South Atlantic League. Before the San Francisco Giants took over as the team's affiliate after the 2004 season, the GreenJackets were aligned with the Boston Red Sox, who had replaced the Pittsburgh Pirates. During their time with the Red Sox, notable players like Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia made it to the major leagues, although knuckleballer Tim Wakefield pitched for the GreenJackets in 1989 while with the Pirates. The Red Sox's tenure was marked by immediate success, as the GreenJackets clinched the South Atlantic League championship in their first season as a Red Sox affiliate.
The 2020 season was halted and eventually canceled for Augusta and all Minor League Baseball teams due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the MiLB Reorganization in 2021, the Braves chose Augusta as their new Low-A affiliate in the Low-A East league. In 2022, the Low-A East was rebranded as the Carolina League, reviving the name used prior to the 2021 reorganization, and was officially classified as a Single-A league.
The team's name pays tribute to The Masters golf tournament held across the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia, where the winner receives a green jacket. The GreenJackets' logo features a green wasp in a tam o' shanter cap, symbolizing both the golf tournament and the team's connection to it.
Each year, the GreenJackets embrace an alter ego for one week and become the Pimento Cheese. This playful name honors The Masters' iconic pimento cheese sandwich, a popular item at the tournament, and is prominently featured on their caps, jerseys, and team branding during that period.
