Home to the Spartans since 1999, the UNCG Baseball Stadium provides the program with one of the finest on-campus playing facilities in the Southern Conference and the state of North Carolina. The stadium was dedicated when the Blue and Gold played George Washington on Feb. 12 before a crowd of 1,835. With two grass berms on either side of the main seating area, the facility can accommodate upwards of 3,500 spectators. The UNCG Baseball Stadium also recently hosted the 2014 North Carolina 4A baseball state championship series.
In the fall of 2010, work was completed on a $2.3 million fieldhouse which is located along the first base line. The new 10,000-square-foot facility provides numerous uses for the program. The building has a team locker room; a lounge area for players; a locker room for the coaching staff; two batting cages; an equipment room; and a dedicated athletic training room. Prior to the 2008 season, a new scoreboard with a video system was unveiled. It allows live video to be run through the board and provides graphics informing fans of the latest up to the second statistics for players in the game.
On April 18, 2006, it was the site of UNCG's first win over a top-ranked team as the Spartans defeated No. 1 North Carolina, 7-6. The Tar Heels went on to appear in the national championship game later that year.
The stadium, which was built at a cost of $5.4 million, is set on approximately 13 acres and includes a state-of-the-art field, offices for all the coaches, a press box, a ticket office, concession building, public restrooms and a grounds maintenance building. The stadium includes 889 fixed, fold-down seats and grass slopes along both foul lines that provide space for additional seating The field has a layered design with drainage pipe in trenches covered with a gravel base and a sand/soil rootzone mixture that provides optimum turf growing conditions with excellent drainage. The Major League-sized dugouts are equipped with restrooms along with phones to the bullpens and press box for easy communication. Equipped with stadium lighting, scoreboard and public address system, the stadium also has a press box that includes a working space to accommodate print and electronic media needs.
The university and designers incorporated several features to produce an attractive, top-of-the-line facility. These features include brick walls matching other university buildings, extensive landscaping, including over 120 trees, a new university entrance sign and two significant sculptures incorporated into the buildings.
The UNCG Baseball Stadium has also been highly decorated by several different publications. After the 2016 season, the stadium was ranked the 46th best park in all of Division I baseball by Stadium Journey. The stadium was ranked No. 2 on the "Best 1,000ish Seat Stadium" by Eric Sorenson of eastonbaseball.com in 2012. In 2006, the UNCG Baseball Stadium was ranked the fifth-best college baseball stadium, again by Eric Sorenson, this time through CSTV.com.
Since the stadium opened in 1999, the Spartans have recorded 18 winning seasons and own an overall record of 441-236-1. In 2003, UNCG earned 27 wins at home, the most in a single season. In the 2016 season, the Spartans earned a 25-5 record at the UNCG Baseball Stadium, recording the program's highest home winning percentage at .833.
